MDDC Board Elects New Officers for 2015

At its Annual Meeting, Thursday, November 13th, Maryland | Delaware | DC Press Association board members elected Ben Phillips, president of the Afro-American Newspapers, as president of the MDDC Board of Directors.  He succeeds Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of The Daily Record, who will become MDDC's immediate past president when her term ends at the end of 2014.  Also elected were Geordie Wilson, publisher of the Frederick News-Post, as vice-president, and Mike Kilian, executive editor of The Daily Times, as treasurer.  Karen Acton, CEO of Post Community Media, was re-elected as secretary.

Fischer-Huettner thanked the membership for the opportunity to serve the newspaper industry and accepted an award for her dedicated service on behalf of the Association.  She then presented Phillips with the president's gavel, signifying the upcoming change in leadership.  Incoming president Phillips shared his appreciation for Huettner and how they have worked so well together during this transitional year for the Association.  He then addressed the membership, noting that he had discussed the importance of the role of the president and the Association with Jake Oliver, The Afro-American's publisher.  Phillip's initiatives for the coming year will focus on digital products and using technology to attract and sustain readership.  He noted that he is looking forward to “working with the staff and board, to figure out common ground for growth.”

The Association board also re-elected Ed Dulin, president / CEO of Independent Newsmedia Inc. USA, and David Fike, president of APG Chesapeake, to another three-year term, and elected current immediate past president, Paul Milton, assistant managing editor, targeted media of the Baltimore Sun Media Group, to a three-year term.
