Legislative Update

The Maryland primary election was held June 24, and the Delaware Assembly adjourned June 30th, making for an end of month rush of activity. In addition, the MDDC Government Affairs committee added new members. What does it mean for MDDC members?

Survey:  Professional Development Needs

A working group of members, including Andy Green, of the Baltimore Sun, Betsy Griffin, of the The Star Democrat, and Tom Linthicum, of the TDL Group, are developing a professional development series that will debut in the fall.  Help us focus this work by sharing your preferences for topics/times/venues.  Respond to EDITORIAL topics survey  or SALES/ CIRCULATION/ BUSINESS topics survey, according to your needs.
 

Public Information Act, Open Meetings Compliance Board and Open Government

MDDC has revamped and added members to the Editorial Committee's FOIA/PIA working group.  This group, chaired by Jim Lee, Editor of the Carroll County Times, has members from MD, DE and DC, reflecting the diversity and strength of our members.  This group will coordinate any regional or statewide initiative/projects that could improve access public documents and act as a clearinghouse for those issues. MDDC will host an elective session at the Maryland Municipal League's fall conference.  This hour and 45-minute session will examine PIA issues in social media and draw on the expertise of Jim Lee, Adam Snyder of the OAG and a municipal attorney. 

The Maryland Open Meetings Compliance Board has published it's opinions in the Maryland Register, and with the July 1 appointments, its membership has completely turned over.  Read the full article.

MDDC executive director, Rebecca Snyder, and MDDC Board member, Jim McLaughlin, are participating in the DC Open Government Coalition to provide a road map for more transparent government to the incoming mayor.  The recommendations will cover open meetings, open data and FOIA requests and will be finalized in the fall. 
 

MDDC is MOVING!

As of August 1, the MDDC offices will be moving to 60 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.  Our phone and fax numbers will remain unchanged.  We will be closing the office on Friday, August 1 and Monday, August 4 for the move.  Email will be the best way to reach MDDC staffers during that time.  We look forward to seeing you and welcoming visitors once we are settled!
 

Training

  • The Gazette Newspapers have consolidated some of their publications and will no longer publish the Olney, Damascus and Potomac editions of the Gazette as of 6/18/14.
  • Coastal Point has launched Explore Coastal Delaware, an information-based app that will point people to local restaurants, shops, activities and more along the Delaware coast, and is free for users to download.  Read the story here.
  • Sundra Hominik named executive editor of the Dover Post as of 6/23/14.  Read more here.
  • Vanessa Junkin, of The Daily Times in Salisbury, was elected as the Secretary of SPJ Maryland-Pro, effective June 1, 2014, for a one-year term.  Other newly elected officers are Steve Schuster, President and Jennifer Brannock Cox, Treasurer.  Read the article at the SPJ website.
