Proudly Serving Maryland, Delaware and D.C. Newspapers Since 1908

MDDC Press Foundation receives $20,000 pledge from the Nutting Foundation

(Baltimore, MD) – The Nutting Foundation has pledged to contribute $20,000 to support the Maryland | Delaware | DC Press Foundation’s internship program. This gift will honor the memory of Jeremy Arias of The Frederick News-Post and his contributions and dedication to his community and the journalism craft. MDDC will designate the interns supported by this funding as the Frederick News-Post Jeremy Arias Intern.

Jeremy Arias, police and courts reporter for the News-Post, passed away August 31 following a brief illness. Jeremy was known for his commitment to journalism, and the News-Post recognized his compassion and advocacy. The News-Post remembers Jeremy for being “every kid’s highlight of a News-Post newsroom tour…he won more than his share of awards, and he ruffled more than his share of feathers.”

Jeremy studied journalism at the University of Maryland and previously worked for the Montgomery County Gazette and Harrisburg’s Patriot-News.

The Nutting Foundation and the Nutting family – owners of Ogden Newspapers – are committed to supporting excellence in journalism through community service and leadership for more than 130 years. Cameron Nutting Williams notes, “we can think of no better example for a budding young journalist.”

MDDC’s Reese Cleghorn Internship program supports developing college-student journalists by providing experience in newsrooms in Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia through 8-week paid summer internships.

This contribution and many others helps the MDDC Press Foundation to assure that young journalists have the opportunity to grow their skills mentored by and working with experienced and capable professionals. Foundation interns in the past have excelled in newsrooms throughout Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. A recent survey showed that 71% of Foundation interns moved into paid journalism jobs after graduation.
