Murphy’s Law — Your MDDC Update from Executive Director Jack Murphy for April 25, 2013

Post lawyer, Daily Times editor nominated for board
By Jack Murphy

The Washington Post and Gannett’s Salisbury Daily Times have nominated two new members for the MDDC Board of Directors, to replace Eric Lieberman and Greg Bassett, who have left their papers.

The Post has nominated Jim McLaughlin, and Gannett nominated Michael Kilian, the new executive editor of the Delmarva Media Group, which includes the Daily Times and eight weekly shore newspapers in three states and the website Delmarvanow.com. He began in this position in March.

The board of directors will vote on the nominations at its next meeting May 17.

McLaughlin worked for Lieberman as associate counsel at the Post. He has also worked closely with the MDDC Government Affairs Committee and has testified on behalf of the association at the Maryland General Assembly and the District of Columbia Council.

His practice at the Post encompasses a broad range of issues relating to newsgathering and publication, including First Amendment issues; libel, defamation and privacy, and open records and open meetings.

Since 2012, McLaughlin has been the chairman of the D.C. Bar Media Law Committee, the primary professional group of media lawyers in the District of Columbia. He is the co-chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Media Law Resource Center, and is actively involved in the D.C. Open Government Coalition, a nonprofit organization that promotes transparency in the District’s government. He recently oversaw successful litigation against the D.C. Council to stop the practice of Councilmembers’ avoiding FOIA by conducting government business on private email accounts.

Before joining the Post in 2006, Mr. McLaughlin was an attorney at Zuckerman Spaeder (2004-06) and Covington & Burling (1999-2003). From 2003 to 2004, he was the McCormick Tribune Legal Fellow at The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, where he specialized in First Amendment issues. He is a graduate of Amherst College and Yale Law School.

Kilian worked previously as associate editor for the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, where he oversaw the printed edition’s format change in 2012 and planned and edited coverage recognized in Best of Gannett, Associated Press Media Editors and Sigma Delta Chi contests.

A graduate of Cornell University, Kilian, 49, spent most of his life in upstate New York before moving to Vermont in 2010. Kilian previously held editing positions in Utica, N.Y., Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Troy, N.Y.
