Murphy’s Law — Your MDDC Update from Executive Director Jack Murphy

Open invite to open meetings board's annual meeting
By Jack Murphy

If you have a special interest in open meetings, you should consider attending the Open Meetings Compliance Board’s annual meeting, Friday, Sept. 20 at the Maryland Attorney General’s offices in Baltimore.

The board meets each September to report on its activities for the previous fiscal year, and to hear suggestions about how the open meetings law might be improved. It is generally a fairly informal affair, with the board members sitting around a table with audience members.

MDDC staff and members have attended the board meetings for many years. Tom Marquardt, retired editor and publisher of the Annapolis Capital and one of the fathers of the open meetings law, attend virtually every meeting since the board’s founding in 1992. I plan to attend again this year.

At minimum, it will give journalists an opportunity to meet the members of the board, Elisabeth L. Nilson, the chair and members Courtney McKeldin and Julio Morales. The board members have welcomed public participation in the meeting, though few people actually attend.

The meeting starts at 10 a.m. at the Attorney General’s office at 200 St. Paul Pl. in Baltimore. If you wish to attend, the board’s website has a link to a reservation form.
