One Month Left to Accept Reese Cleghorn Applications

One month left to submit your application
The Reese Cleghorn Internship program application period is now open and the program is going paperless.

The MDDC Press Foundation offers a paperless application and reference forms (linked at the bottom of this brief) for collegiate candidates interested in being considered for a paid internship at an MDDC member paper in the summer of 2014.

The application period closes Nov. 20. All applications are to be submitted online. Questions should be directed to MDDC services coordinator Jennifer Thornberry via email.

Complete the Reese Cleghorn Summer Internship application online now through September. The accompanying reference form is also required.

Internships are offered annually to eight outstanding students interested in reporting, copy editing and photojournalism. The program is named in honor of Reese Cleghorn, the former University of Maryland Journalism Dean, and is designed primarily for our smaller members, dailies and non-dailies. MDDC will pay the interns a stipend of $300 a week, net of taxes. The program spans eight weeks during the summer.

Papers participating in the program during the summer of 2013 were the Baltimore Sun, the Sun Community Newspapers, the Carroll County Times, the Gazette Newspapers in Montgomery County, the Frederick News-Post, the Daily Record, the Delaware State News and the Herald-Mail.

Eligibility for the program is designed to generate the maximum amount of candidates. To be eligible, students must meet at least one of the three criteria:
1. Students must currently attend a four-year college in Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia, or...
2. Be able to document a planned transfer from a two-year program to an aforementioned four-year school, or...
3. Reside within the MDDC region while attending a four-year college elsewhere.

The MDDC will match interns with newspapers within a reasonable driving distance from their homes. Application materials were sent to schools in September, and we plan to make our selections in January. At that time we will match the prospective interns with member newspapers, subject to the approval of the host editors. Final selections and assignments will be completed by early February 2014.
