When District of Columbia public school students returned to class this year, The Common
Denominator, a bi-weekly newspaper in Washington, became required reading for many of
them.
- American Profile Adds Web-based Content
American Profile has added a downloadable content service for community newspapers. The
new service, Hometown Content, is complimentary to the more than 650 newspaper partners
who distribute American Profile, the national weekly magazine celebrating hometown
American life.

Ann is the publisher of the Legal Times in
Washington, DC. She has been with the newspaper since 1988 when she started as a reporter.
Since then she has served as managing editor, executive editor and associate publisher
before being named publisher in 1998. Previously she wrote for Governing magazine,
Congressional Quarterly and served at the UPI Moscow bureau. She began her career as a

Newspaper advertising expenditures for the second quarter of 2001 totaled $11.1 billion, a
decrease of 8.4 percent over the same period last year, according to preliminary estimates
from the Newspaper Association of America. Total newspaper advertising had its highest
increase in the second quarter last year, when it was up 6.8 percent. |

Newspapers Reduces Issues, Cuts Monday Edition
The Journal Newspapers, which publishes the Montgomery and Prince George's Journals in
Maryland, changed its publication schedule this month, eliminating Monday editions of the
newspaper. Starting on Sept. 10 it began publishing its six papers five days a week,
Tuesday through Friday and Sunday. |

Oct. 1 is the filing deadline for the Periodical Class Statement of Ownership, Management
and Circulation, Form 3526, with the United State Postal Service.
- ABC Defines Electronic Edition Sales
The Audit Bureau of Circulations passed guidelines earlier this year defining electronic
sales of newspapers, allowing publishers to create and sell new electronic editions of
their publications and still have them count as paid circulation.
