Washington Post Names New President

Stephen P. Hills, a vice president of The Washington Post who oversees its advertising, circulation and marketing departments, became president and general manager of the newspaper effective September 1.

Hills, 43, who joined the newspaper in 1987, will oversee Post business operations under publisher and chief executive Boisfeuillet Jones, Jr. The positions of president and general manager have been vacant since September 2000, when Jones was promoted to run the newspaper.

Hills was a summer intern at The Post while earning an MBA degree at Harvard Business School and joined the newspaper in 1987 after his graduation. He was a 1981 graduate of Yale University and briefly covered sports news for the San Mateo Times in California. He was co-founder and president of the Bay City Business Journal in San Francisco before attending business school.

In 1991, during the Washington region’s harsh recession, Hills developed a campaign to sell advertising to small retail businesses, and the success of that initiative led to his promotion in 1993 to vice president for advertising. He became vice president for sales and marketing in January 2001, adding circulation to his duties.
