Winners of advertising contest celebrated

Members and supporters of the Maryland | Delaware | DC Press Association came together yesterday at a luncheon program to honor excellence in media sales by recognizing the winners of the Advertising Contest, which celebrates print and online work completed between June 1,2015 and May 31, 2016. The contest, governed by the Association’s Advertising / Press Services Committee, admitted entries from 20 member publications among 19 categories. There are four divisions in the contest, which group member publications into daily and non-daily categories, then further group them by circulation. One Best in Category award is given in each category across all divisions.  The capstone award, one per division, is Advertising Sweepstakes.

Three “best of show” prizes were awarded for exceptional work. The first was the winner of the best of category contest, as selected by judges from the New Jersey Press Association. This prize, for advertising design, was awarded to Edwin Krumm and Kathy McGinty of the Cape Gazette for their advertisement for Fifer’s Farm Market. The event audience chose the best of show winner for House Promotion and Self Promotion by ballot at the event reception. Samantha Bangh and Cecelia Lee of the Frederick News-Post won House Promotion best of show for their campaign “Did you know?” Tom Maglio and Staff of the Coastal Point won Self Promotion best of show for Seaside Bride.

The Association honored Cecelia Lee of the Frederick News-Post as Designer of the Year. This prize honors a designer’s body of work over the course of the contest cycle. The submission package included 8-10 pieces of the designers work and a letter of recommendation from their manager.  Anna Joyce, Marketing and Niche Publications Manager at the News-Post and Lee’s supervisor, notes that Lee is “able to design across multiple platforms - print ads, publications, collateral, logos, web, social media and video - but she also has a style we've found appeals to younger audiences, to whom we're targeting many of our events.” In this vein, Lee is also adept with video, creating the clip on the Frederick News-Post’s FCM Solutions site.

The Advertising Sweepstakes awards represent the best publication in each division. These awards are chosen based on the points accumulated for first, second and third prizes in each category. In the daily divisions, The Baltimore Sun won the award in Division A; and The Delaware State News was named Advertising Sweepstakes winner for Division B. For non-daily publications, the Coastal Point won in Division C and Cape Gazette won the award in Division D. Also at the event, the Association hosted a panel discussion for advertising agency buyers and media professionals. Immediately following the lunch program, the Association hosted a “speed-dating” event for agency and advertising professionals that provided 15 minute one-on-one meetings to discuss media product offerings and agency needs.

This program was supported by the Advertising Awards Showcase & Member Directory publication, available to members of the Association and selected agencies, which lists all MDDC members with expanded profiles of their publications and platforms.
