Become a Mentor
MDDC Staff
We are so excited about our internship class this year. We’ve found 12 talented students who will work in our member newsrooms this summer – our largest class ever.
Of course they will perform real journalism and work with our top-notch reporters, editors, photographers, audience desk and etc., but there are some things that they just can’t pick up about our business in the short time they’re with us.
That’s where you come in.
We’re adding a new mentoring program to their internship this year, but we can’t do it without your help.
These talented proteges need mentors from all aspects of the journalism business and all ages and experiences. We’re hoping you will volunteer to help them grow into the excellent journalists we expect them to be. And we hope you will pass along this volunteer request to your colleagues. Anyone from your newsroom is eligible to be a mentor, and we hope to have more volunteers than interns (so you may get a pass this time around).
How this works:
- We would facilitate matching volunteers with our 2022 intern class. Each intern will be given (we hope!) several mentor candidates to choose from.
- Mentor experiences will be virtual, preferably by video conference, with in-person meetings optional as time and distance may permit. Volunteer mentors would attend a training we are putting together in April, attend a meet and greet with the intern and mentor, and finally commit to meeting with their protege for about an hour each week for the eight weeks the intern serves in one of our member newsrooms (May-August. Internship starting times vary somewhat).
- We would also hope you would evaluate the experience at the end so we can improve it. And we hope we helped build a relationship that can continue into the future.
If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the form linked here by March 11. For questions, please contact Adrianne Flynn, adriannemflynn@gmail.com.
Feel free to share this with others in your newsroom and THANK YOU!
