Sunshine Week Events
Sunshine Week is coming up soon (March 13 – 19) – and MDDC has a special report that you can use, and events planned for the week.
The reporting package (available March 11) will focus on the implementation of Anton’s Law. This special package is being managed by Miranda Spivack (bio below):
Maryland recently joined a handful of states seeking to make law enforcement agencies more transparent. With the passage of Anton’s Law in 2021, many details about police discipline could be released to the public. But so far, as journalists, advocates and others seeking to find out more about how police agencies handle complaints about misconduct are learning, getting to the records is proving to be, at best, a mixed experience.
For Sunshine Week, the annual national exploration of transparency in government, the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association is assessing how well Anton’s Law has been working, since it took effect on Oct. 1, 2021. We invite you to add to our story by asking law enforcement agencies in your own community for their internal discipline records and records of community complaints, to help Marylanders understand how the law is working and if it needs to be improved to make access easier for all.
The Panel Discussion (March 21)
Miranda will host a virtual panel discussing next steps on Anton’s Law and what is needed.
We are also collecting Sunshine Week events and stories and will be retweeting and amplifying Sunshine stories – just tag us on Twitter (@mddcpress).
The project is being managed by Miranda S. Spivack, a veteran journalist who has written extensively about government transparency at the state and local level. A former Washington Post reporter and editor, her “State Secrets” stories for Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting https://revealnews.org/topic/state-secrets/ won SPJ’s 2017 Sunshine Award. She recently wrote about police discipline records and disappearing civilian criminal records in a series published by the McClatchy chain of newspapers. https://www.sacbee.com/search/?q=spivack+and+clean+slate
