Geared towards interns and early career journalists, MDDC brings experts in an online format to present timely and relevant material. The small class size (limited to 18 participants) promotes discussion and interactive activities. Join us for one or all of these FREE sessions.

Implicit Bias in the Media and How to Minimize It. Phil Freedman, News Journal/Delawareonline, and John-John Williams, Baltimore Sun, discuss the subtle ways our language influences public perceptions.
Data Visualization. Adam Marton, University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism, demonstrates the power of data visualization using free, interactive tools.
Objectivity in Reporting. Baltimore Sun reporters Mike Preston and Daniel Oyefusi discuss how to overcome the urge to root for the home team and how that carries over into all aspects of your writing.
Effective Interviewing. Andy West of the Delaware State News, Tom Linthicum of MDDC and DCF mentor Larry Nagengast discuss the right questions to ask and the right ways to ask them.
Bring Data Stories to Life. Alexander Pyles, University of Maryland, Philip Merrill College of Journalism, share to how to bring data stories to life by using social media to find sources in specific communities. Ideally, participants will have taken “Unlocking Data with Google Sheets” AND “Data Visualization”, though it is not required.
Cross-Platform Content Preparation. Tom Byrne of Delaware Public Media, Mark Eichmann and Cris Barrish of WHYY and Julie Zeglen of Technical.ly describe their adventures in preparing the same content for print, broadcast and/or the web.
Using Public Records in Reporting. How can reporters use public records in their reporting, and what are the most effective ways to gain access? Danielle Ohl of the Capital Gazette shares her expertise.
The Next Generation of Journalism. Journalism today isn’t what it was like in 2020, so we should expect many more changes by the time 2040 rolls around.
